movie madness

2 minute read

I can’t believe it has been almost a week and a half since I saw the Harry Potter movie last weekend. Yep, I saw a movie on the opening weekend, which is something that I hardly ever do. Don’t want to appear too keen you know.

We got to see the film in a Notting Hill cinema* and by some bizarre twist managed to get two fantastic seats together (that’s George and I) with loads of legroom and a perfect view, while the other four (Gemma, Dave, Paul and Dav) had to sit upstairs, with no legroom, surrounded by smokers.

Anyway, all this good fortune did nothing to convince me that this film was up to the hype. Maybe the books (which I haven’t read, admittedly) can be read by adults as well as children, but the film was an out-and-out kids film – this didn’t seem to annoy any of the other adults in the cinema, but bugged the hell out of me. I got bored. The one good thing about the film though was the performance of the ‘older’ actors, who really did their part in making the whole thing that little more believable.

And, just for fun of course, the Childcare Action Project review of the film. And remember, talking witches hats are offensive to god!

*(note: never search for ‘notting hill cinema’ on the web with the hope of finding details of cinemas in Notting Hill. Doh!)

video madness

I am not buying any more rental videos. There is no point. I simply will fall asleep, every single time. Two cases in point over the past week – One Night At McCools and The Mexican. Both films, I think, were good. Percentage watched? 50% of each, if that.

I hate my comfy sofa!

shopping hell

The saturday before Harry Potter was spent with George’s mum, sister and little niece, Ellie. They were down for the day to see George and the flat, to show Ellie Hamley’s (the finest toyshop in the world) and to have a look around some of the other shops in central London. Things learnt? Oxford Street on saturday is hell. Hamley’s on a saturday is worse than hell, and little children need to be reassured when you take them underground, in the dark, in a very noisy train that’s full of people.

It was nice to play ‘friendly uncle jimmy’ for the day though, and Hamley’s did have some cool stuff!
