Cor blimey. I still get goose pimples thinking about how much fun I had at the O2 Wireless Festival this past Saturday. The festival has been going on for a few days, but with no bands that I particularly had a desire to see, but then I noticed that Chic (or, more precisely, Nile Rodgers presents Chic) were headlining the second stage on Saturday night.

Now, back in the day, back in the geeky teenage yours of your now uber-trendy author, I used to spend many an evening in my bedroom listening to 70s funk and disco (while my mates were out getting mashed and doing normal teenage things), and one of my favourites was Chic. Chic were happy, lively and funky – so funky – and even now I can reel off the words to most of their tracks. So the chance to see them live? Too good to pass up.

It took a few days, but I managed to convince Gemma to come along (George was away on her hen do weekend). The festival itself was pretty disappointing, kind of small, but without any ‘small-festival’ atmosphere, and we wandered around listening to various bands and drinking lots of lemonade in a hard-core fashion.

But then, Chic. They blew me away – a great show, full of energy with a band that obviously loved to do what they were doing. A great horn section, some super-funky guitars and lead singers with fun and cheesy dance routines all combined with Chic’s historic songs to lift the already enthusiastic audience. Good Times indeed!

I even persuaded Gemma to wait at the end when we saw Nile and the band come out to meet the fans – and after a bit of waiting I even got a photo with Mr Rodgers himself – the closest thing to a musical hero that I have – and I don’t even care that my hair looks absolutely terrible
