That is the promise, and having installed the Audioscrobbler plug-in for iTunes (which tracks the music you are listening to, building up an online history), which then links back to Last.FM, it appears to live up to it…
You can listen to recommendations, make friends (eugh!) and generally do lots of cool, musical stuff.
Definitely worth trying out, and this might become my new work listening pleasure. Anything to drown out the mobile phone ringtones…
