Whales & Dolphins, Oh My!

1 minute read

Our second week in Christchurch and the trips have begun!

First off was whale watching in Kaikoura. Ms Bond had tried to do this seven years ago, but hit a wall of cloud. Thankfully, second time around, the weather was gorgeous. We got three sightings of two whales, and a pod of Dusky Dolphins came along for the ride. We had a “whale” of a time!

Second visit out was to Akaroa, to stay at the Onuka Farm hostel. I had been recommended to stay in their Stargazer huts, which were fantastic. The weather during the day was great, and Akaroa itself was nice to walk around. We managed a little sunbathing in the afternoon, then back into town for even more seafood.

Then the clouds rolled in, turning our stargazers into cloudgazers, and our next morning kayak with the dolphins was cancelled. So that worked out well.

This past weekend has been out with the familllly, over to some beaches in the 4WD, then today out in the boat. A little choppy, but we managed to make it out to some lovely quiet bays. And, apart from the little tiny water creatures that seemed to like nipping at my waist, all was gravy.

Next stop, the West Coast…
